Fran McKendree in an outdoor concert May 2, at 7:00 p.m. on the lawn at at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church
St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain will host Fran McKendree in an outdoor concert. The concert is free and open to the public with an offering collected to help defray expenses. The audience is welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets to enjoy the concert on St. Timothy’s front yard. In the event of rain, the concert will be held inside the church. Beginning at 6:00, refreshments, including picnic supper items, will also be sold by the youth of the church to support summer mission trips.
This will be McKendree’s second concert at St. Timothy’s. In September 2006, he entertained an enthusiastic, intergenerational audience. His concerts are very participatory with the audience encouraged to sing many styles of songs with him.
The Rev. George Choyce, Rector, said, “Whether you’re in the front row or the back, you feel he’s singing just to you.” Associate Rector Kathryn Mathewson added, “He makes me laugh and go deeper in my spirituality and is a thoroughly engaging person.” Both priests agree that Fran has a way of using music that touches all ages and invites his listeners into the celebration of what it means to find joy in our lives.
McKendree’s career began as he played guitar and sang with the folk band McKendree Spring. In the 1970s, he toured with musicians like Elton John, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, and Ike and Tina Turner. His guitar now rests in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
McKendree’s musical and spiritual life took a turn when he discerned a call to work within the Episcopal Church by revitalizing worship through music. He sees this work as “a chance to challenge people with music. Spirituality in music is really deep in the Episcopal Church.”

Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop May 31, Saturday 9 am until 3 pm (CST)
The workshop offers a contemporary presentation of the discipline of Centering Prayer as silent communion with God beyond concepts, words and images. Centering Prayer is a method of prayer, which prepares us to receive the gift of God's presence, traditionally called contemplative prayer. It consists of responding to the Spirit of Christ by consenting to God’s presence and action within. It furthers the development of contemplative prayer by quieting our faculties to cooperate with the gift f God’s presence.
Presenter: The Rev. Tom Ward, Episcopal priest for over thirty years, served parishes in Mississippi and Tennessee and recently retired as the University Chaplain at Sewanee, the University of the South.
Fee: $35 Please complete and return the Online Registration Form at least fourteen (14) days prior to event. St. Mary's Sewanee: A center for Spiritual Development, 800-728-1659
